Screen Start

Screen Start is a new initiative that will support 20 people from under-represented communities to gain access to, and employment in, the screen sector. Screen Start participants will receive the living wage as they undertake a 6 month programme of bespoke training, industry mentoring and work placements.

Recruitment for Screen Start will open in the summer of 2022.

We are reaching out to schools, colleges and communities to raise awareness of the numerous positions available in the screen industries.  Our “road show” is designed to educate, inform and inspire people to apply to the programme.  We will demystify the terminology seen on the end credits of any film or television programme and point out the number of people employed in the industry from design, make-up, costume, construction and craft trades as well as numerous other creative, IT and technical roles.

Screen Start is being launched while the screen sector in Scotland is booming, but still faces serious challenges around equality, diversity and inclusion. There are persistent issues of under-representation for many communities at entry level, most notably those from lower socio-economic groups, people who are disabled and those from Black, Asian or from other groups who experience racism.
